dumb

In my apartment building, the lifts (elevators) stop at 3 floors - 1, 6 and 11.

When more than one person enters the lift at the 1st floor, it is polite to ask the other person which floor he / she is going to, in case he / she is going somewhere different from you. You will then press the buttons corresponding to the correct floors.

But recently, I have encountered many people who are too rude / lazy to talk to the other person in the lift. They just automatically press the "6" and the "11" button at the same time. As a result, if both of us are going to the 11th floor, the lift makes a needless stop at the 6th floor. This is especially irritating if you are going home at the end of a long work day and gruelling commute. Won't it just hurt to ask?

This is the symptom of our "Post Human" society. People exchange information but no communicate. That is what sms texting is all about. Exchanging info is crisp, clear and instant. "Conversation" is slow, messy and sometimes painful.

People say as little as possible to make sure they get what they want as fast as they can. Conversation slows you down. It opens the door to getting involved in someone else's life.

eg. Person A and Person B

A : Which floor?
B : 11 please.... Thank you.
A: You're welcome.

Normally it conversation stops here. But what if A and B sees each other at the same time everyday going to the same floor? Or they see each other at the end of the day.

A:Which floor? Oh.. i know 11th right?
B:Yes. Thanks. You remember?
A: Yes, i asked you the same question this morning.
B: which floor do you work on?
A : ....

Now A is unlikely to say NYOB!

Soon A and B develop some sort of familiarity.

So if A and B has no desire to open up, then forget about asking which floor..just press and continue in silent anonymity..

Welcome to Our Post Human Society.
